Tavern Hotel in Surigao City| excellent service, best value!

The day here begins with a warm cup of coffee on one hand while the other hand draws the curtain to one side. From where I sit, Surigao Strait which figured in a tumultuous part of history, is as flat as glass. I can make out a couple of ships gingerly approaching toward the harbor, slicing the calm water in its wake.

The 5th floor balcony of Tavern Hotel's Oceanview Suite
Surigao City is just rousing from sleep. Tricycles begin to buzz in opposite directions of the boulevard five floors down. Joggers, five of them, exchange pleasantries while catching their breaths.

Then, the "hour" comes in. Spectacular is an understatement to describe this dramatic sunrise from the Pacific. The distant islands are bathed in the morning glow of red orange that will soon turn into azure. Blades of light emanating from behind the clouds knife the skies. A view so stunning and fleeting at the same time.

I finish off my coffee and then plump myself in the sofa inside the suite before the air outside gets thick. The rest of the day will be spent at the Pebble Beach.

Rates
Php1,900.00 (standard) to Php3,600.00 (ocean view suite)

Basics
The words "rich history" and "modern luxury" can blend easily in one sentence for this hotel in Surigao. Since its humble beginning as a nine-room lodging in the 1940s, Tavern remains the venue of choice for locals and expats alike.

Today, it is the premier hotel and special events venue in Surigao with 75 well-appointed rooms plus the only fine dining restaurant in Surigao. Hotel Tavern Surigao has all in all 3 restaurants, 8 banquet and function rooms, a lobby lounge and a Business Office.

But the jewel that makes Hotel Tavern a class all its own is the efficient service and genuine friendliness of its staff. Very consistent! The friends and I who are on this trip are truly impressed!

sunshine and sensual pleasure at Isla Cabana

It is without a doubt that Siargao Island is the playground of the gods during summer.

The swimming pool at Isla Cabana. On both sides of the pool are jacuzzis.

In the Philippines, where summer is eternal, the gods even play favorites by giving this side of the archipelago not just sunshine but long stretches of talcum-fine beaches with palm leaves swaying and reaching for the sky and above all--a stunning swell perfect for surfing from September to December.

Siargao, many years before, conjured an image of a backwater island with nipa huts that dot its coastline. In less than a decade, locals have seen the transformation of the island--from the first wave of arguably unknown surfers who flocked in and lived in surfer's shack to the present heavyweights billeted in the plethora of beach bungalows. The Tourism Road to Cloud 9 in General Luna town today is home to a wide range of accommodations and has been hosting year after year big names in the international surfing circuit. The international surfing competitions run the gamut from Billabong to Roxy to Quicksilver. Add to that a thumbs up by CNN naming Siargao Island as one of the world's top surfing spots! Shaka to that!

no need to show printed plane tickets in airports says DOJ

Philippine airports are starting to go paperless. All passengers have to do is present the digital version of the plane tickets from their smartphones or tablets at the immigration counter (take note, it's immigration. so, only international departures).

While I haven't tried presenting a digital plane ticket yet, here's hoping this new policy is in synch with the carriers. Otherwise, it's useless if airlines insist on seeing the printed ticket.

The new policy is by virtue of Operations Order No. SBM-2013-003 entitled “Removing the Requirement of Presentation of the Printed Hard Copy of Return and/or Onward Passage Ticket.”
