Philippines-New Zealand working holiday scheme (WHS)

To work, study and live in New Zealand under a Working Holiday Scheme (WHS) for Filipino passport holders is now possible!

When I was in my mid-twenties, I met several South Koreans my age who went to Australia and/or France for working holidays. I secretly loathed them because my being born with a "wrong" passport doesn't allow me to do any working holiday arrangement with any foreign country.

The whole idea of a working holiday revolves around adventure + work: traveling and (legally) working in a foreign country at the same time. For an independent adventure-seeker 18-30 years old, what can be better than that?

In October last year, the government of the Philippines and New Zealand (NZ) signed the agreement which will take effect in the next couple of days. February 5, 2014 to be exact. Under the arrangement, a Filipino WHS visa holder may study/train for a maximum of 3 months or work for a year with a limit of 3 months per employer in NZ.

Both governments will offer 100 WHS visas per year to its citizens. Interested Filipinos who are 18 to 30 years old may now apply for the New Zealand Working Holiday Scheme (WHS) visa at the Embassy of New Zealand in Makati. Once issued a visa, a Pinoy may stay in New Zealand up to a year.

I am past the maximum age limit already. #cringe!
